Jurist whose Hexabiblos (Six Books), completed in 1345, is the most important late Byzantine work of jurisprudence. It comprises a compendium of previous civil and criminal law, as well as earlier legal manuals, including the Prochiron, the Epanagoge, and the Ecloga, supplemented by the Farmer's Law (qq.v.). The Hexabiblos proved to be an enormously popular and long-lived work, one that Renaissance humanists studied. It continued to be used in Greece (q.v.) in the early 20th century.
